Presidential address

Welcome to the Japanese Society of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis and its website.

As you may know, Professor Kotaro Honda developed the thermogravimetry (TG) in 1916. It had incredible usefulness not only from an academic point of view but also a practical industrial application. Professor Takeo Ozawa then developed the rate theory which could analyze a reaction profile of activation energy and reaction mechanism using this TG. In the early years, before Japanese Conference of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis (JCCTA) was formed, many cryogenic to high temperature calorimetric and thermal analysis results were reported sporadically at the annual meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan and/or other such academic societies. In spite of the importance of this breakthrough research, there was no conference that specialized in only these subject matters. Then, the first Japanese Conference dedicated solely to Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis was held in Osaka in the fall of 1965. At that time, researchers and academics began to share and discuss the importance, as well as the problems, concerning all thermal phenomena of the world. All the academic and industrial researchers presented and discussed their findings of thermal phenomenon based on the experimental technique of temperature dependency, thermodynamics and the rate theory from cryogenic temperature to super-high temperature as a common base.

Now, the JCCTA is held in autumn every year and it is the biggest meeting of its kind dedicated to the field. During the JCCTA, there is also an opportunity to experience more specialized workshops, in-depth lectures, and various group activities. Reports of current research in the field of calorimetry and thermal analysis are described by various specialists, as well as the meetingfs report, are published and distributed to all JSCTA members on an annual basis. This allows everyone the opportunity to share their research with others and stay current in the field.

As President (2013-2015), I welcome your interest in the Society. I sincerely believe JSCTA will continue to grow each year with your strong contribution and support.

Finally, if you are not yet a member, why not consider joining us. Take a look at the benefits of membership. Rest assured, you will be a most welcome member!

Sincerely yours,
Takayoshi KIMURA, President
